“Here’s a bad omen. The big man himself has come to greet us in place of Dorrie,” Morris said.

“I thought he never left his workshop,” Madame Marceline said.

Morris tipped a luggage handler a few coins as the man finished piling his and Marceline’s bags onto Morris’s steam dolly. He plugged a guidewire into the dolly—the other end terminating at a battery-powered controller mounted atop his walking stick—then toed the dolly’s ignition switch. Its miniature steam engine huffed to life. The dolly trailed the slender Morris Garvey, dressed in a tailored suit and fitted long coat, like a hungry puppy as he and Madame Marceline Rene, a brunette in the latest Paris dress, waded through the crowds bustling outside the gargantuan, brick structure of Cadillac City Central Station. The throngs parted in curious surprise at the oddity of Morris’s mechanical porter trailing a thin tail of steam. A red-white-and-blue banner strung thirty feet between flagpoles above the Station entry read:
